The Las Vegas Grand Tournament
Welcome to the biggest indoor archery tournament in the world, in a huge arena in Las Vegas. Thousands of archers, from amateurs to Olympic champions, aim for the centre of the target, the X. End after end, the target moves faster and more points are needed. Whoever goes furthest wins the tournament, and the big check.
Archery is in Offline games, Create a table, then Skill games. You play it offline, alone or with bots, or with others at the casino. It is the same game either way.
How to shoot
- Draw your bow: press and hold the Space bar. You hear the string tighten. Enter works too.
- Listen to the aiming tone: once the bow is drawn, it sweeps from left to right and back. The closer it gets to the centre, the louder it is.
- Shoot: release the Space bar when the tone is exactly in the middle, in front of you.
If you wait too long before drawing the bow, after 20 seconds, you are reminded.
Do not keep the bow drawn too long: after two seconds, your hand starts to shake. You can hear it: the tone wavers up and down in pitch, and the shaking grows with time.
If you release the Space bar before the bow is drawn, you lower it without shooting: the arrow is not lost.
When you shoot, your hand always moves a tiny bit, in a way no one can foresee: even the best archer does not hit a 10 every time.
The game takes into account the latency measured by the latency test, in the main menu: take this test once, so that your shot is judged at the exact moment you heard it.
The levels
When you choose archery, you choose your level:
- Beginner: the biggest target.
- Intermediate: a smaller target.
- Advanced: the smallest target.
The rules are the same at every level. Only the size of the target changes. Each level keeps its own saved tables and its leaderboards.
Ends and points
The tournament has 16 ends of 3 arrows.
- The centre of the target, the X, is worth 10 points. Each ring farther out is worth one point less, down to 1. Outside the target, it is a miss.
- In each end, you must reach a number of points with your 3 arrows: 15 points in the first end, then one more in each end. The last end asks for 30 points, that is three times the X.
- If you reach the points needed, you go on to the next end. If not, you are out of the tournament.
- In each end, the target moves a little faster. It speeds up steadily from one end to the next.
- Alone, without bots, you win the tournament by getting through the 16 ends. Your final score is the total of your points.
Between two arrows, the game tells you your points in the end, the points you need, and the arrows you have left.
Offline, with bots
In Offline games, choose Create a table, Skill games, Archery and your level. You come to your table, presented as at the casino: "Table created by You, Archery. 1 of 8 players." If you are logged in to the casino, it is your name instead of "You".
- Start the game.
- Players at the table: Enter gives the list. B seats a bot and Shift+B sends one away, up to seven. Your bots stay at the table from one time to the next.
- Leave the table, or Escape.
Your saved games are in Offline games, Saved tables, then the category, the game and the level, as at the casino. Enter sits you at the table again, then Resume the game picks it up where it stopped, with its bots. Delete removes it, after confirming. A table stays saved until its game ends.
The game is exactly the casino's: everyone in turn, the eliminations, the table's ranking, then your place in your offline leaderboards. You shoot first. The only difference: offline, there is no time limit to shoot.
Your game is also kept at every arrow: if you leave the table during a game, or close the game, it is found in the Saved tables. Control+S puts it there too and takes you back to the table.
Keys during the game
- Space bar held, then released: draw the bow, then shoot.
- R: the end going on, for instance "End 5 of 16".
- T: whose turn it is, and which arrow. When it is yours: "It's your turn, arrow 1."
- S: the archers' scores, the best first.
- Control+S: save the game. Online, for the table's creator only.
- Q: leave the table, after confirming. Offline, the game in progress is kept in the Saved tables, and your table picks it up.
- Escape: pause. If the bow was drawn, it is lowered, and the arrow is not lost. It offers Resume, Give up the game, then Back to the menu offline or Leave the table online. Online, the game goes on meanwhile.
- Shift+F1: the instructions, spoken, with your points and what you need.
- F1: this manual.
Sounds
- The aiming tone: it guides you. It always stays clear, without the arena's resonance.
- The arena: the game's sounds resonate as in a big hall full of people.
- The crowd, in the stands on your left and your right, never in front of you: it goes quiet when an archer aims, and comes back after the shot. It reacts to each arrow as a real crowd, once: it applauds an arrow of 4 points or more, the louder the higher the score; a missed arrow, 1 to 3 points, or an end out of reach draws a disappointed "ooh". On the last arrow of an end, the result is what counts: the end made, it applauds, even a small arrow; the end missed, it is the "ooh", even on a 10.
- Victory: when an archer wins the tournament, whoever they are, the whole arena rises and cheers, all around you.
- Elimination: the crowd's "ooh", with the last arrow. Both stands react together, left and right.
The sound is in 3D in headphones: set it in the Settings.
Together, online
At the casino, choose Create a table, then Skill games, Archery and your level. Everyone at the table plays at the same level.
- Everyone shoots one arrow in turn: everyone shoots their first arrow, then their second, then their third.
- You hear the others shoot, each from their place: the archers stand side by side on the shooting line, from left to right, and each keeps their place for the whole game. The farther an archer is from you on the line, the more distant they sound. The players watching the table as spectators are behind you; the crowd is in the stands on your left and your right.
- A player has 90 seconds to shoot. After that, their arrow is lost.
- An archer who does not reach the points needed is out. They can stay and listen to the game.
- If only one archer is left, they win the tournament. If several get through the 16 ends, the highest total wins, and a tie is possible. If everyone is out in the same end, the best of them wins. At the end, the table's ranking is announced, then your place in the online leaderboards.
- Bots can fill the table: the table's creator adds them with B.
Leaderboards
Control+0 opens the Leaderboards. Archery has a leaderboard for each level: beginner, intermediate and advanced. For each one, you find your best offline scores, and the online leaderboards of the week and of all time.
